LOCATION: * FACILITIES PLANNING DEPARTMENT, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SECTION, CUSTOMER SERVICES GROUP, JOINT ADMINISTRATION OFFICE*

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To participate in the installation, maintenance, support, and technical operation of telecommunication and network operation center systems and related peripheral equipment.

JOB SUMMARY: Under the general supervision from a Supervising Information Technology Technician and the technical guidance from a Senior Information Technology Technician, the incumbent will install, terminate, and test copper and fiber optics cables; maintain and support the following systems: telecommunication, uninterruptible power systems (UPS), badge security access, and network operation center and datacenter monitoring; perform telephone units adds, moves, and changes; setup users’ voicemail box; report, coordinate, and escalate the repair of data and telecommunications lines with the service providers; integrate paging systems, intercom, and other devices with the telecommunication systems; troubleshoot malfunctions to identify and resolve breakdowns and performance problems; maintain records of issues and resolutions using the Districts’ service ticketing system; develop and maintain system documentation and procedures; instruct and train users in proper use of telecommunication related hardware devices and software; participate in meetings with vendors regarding information technology products; respond to questions from users and provide on-site and remote user support; and perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A valid California Class C driver license -AND- for the INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TECHNICIAN I level applicants must possess two years of experience involved in operating, installing, monitoring, testing and maintaining computer network systems in the area of either
peripheral equipment, computer software or telecommunication systems. Completion of 12 semester units in computer or a related information technology discipline may substitute for one year of the required experience. For the INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TECHNICIAN II level, applicants must possess one year of experience performing duties equivalent to an Information Technology Technician I; -OR- Two years of related experience plus completion of 12 semester units in computer or a related information technology discipline. Completion of additional coursework above 12 semester units in computer or a related information technology discipline may substitute for the required experience on a year for year basis. For the INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TECHNICIAN III, one year of experience performing duties equivalent to an Information Technology Technician II.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:


Knowledge of Systimax structured cable infrastructure, fiber optics cables, Avaya telephone systems, Cisco Unified Communication Manager systems, and Cisco Unity and AVST voice mail systems. Extensive experience with installing, terminating, and testing copper and fiber optic cables is highly desirable.

The ability to:Use and operate computer and telecommunication hardware and software; detect and correct a wide range of problems using various diagnostic tools; minimize disruption and downtime when performing troubleshooting and repair tasks; read technical manuals; conduct training; monitor, install, operate and maintain equipment used in Information Technology.

Selection Process:

  • Applications and Supplemental Questions will be reviewed and evaluated for relevant experience.
  • Candidates considered to have the best qualifications will be invited to the written examination.
  • The selection process will consist of a written test weighted at 40%, and an interview weighted at 60%.
  • Candidates must receive a qualifying score on each selection component to move forward in the selection process.

NOTE:
Prior to appointment, a thorough reference check will be conducted. The recommended candidate must undergo a job related pre-employment physical, which includes a drug and alcohol test. Candidates are also subject to a review of their DMV records for moving violations, chargeable accidents or more serious charges.
